Speaker Rejects Motion To Debate Selangor BN’s Stand On Hudud

Shah Alam – State Assembly Speaker Hannah Yeoh has verbally refused the motion to debate Selangor Barisan Nasional’s stand regarding the hudud issue, as well as the probability of the state to implement the Syariah law.

The motion was put forth by Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Sungai Air Tawar assemblyman, Kamarol Zaki Abdul Malik.

However, no official letter on the rejection has been given.

Meanwhile, weighing in on the matter, Puchong Member of Parliament Gobind Singh Deo said the state DAP “will oppose any move to introduce hudud in Selangor”.

Referring to the motion that was submitted to debate the matter, Gobind said DAP had repeated it time and again that it was of the opinion that any law which sought to implement hudud would be unconstitutional.

“The position applies with equal if not more force to state enactments as criminal laws can only be passed by Parliament and not by any state assembly,” he said in a statement today.

The motion was one of two that were rejected from being debated at the state assembly sitting scheduled to begin on Monday.

Earlier, Yeoh had also rejected a motion requiring Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim to apologise on the recent water rationing exercise in the state.

Yeoh said overall the house accepted four motions.

One of the motions accepted was one put forth by PAS’ Jeram assemblyman Datuk Amiruddin Setro to investigate development projects that were being carried out without approval.

Another motion to debate was suggested by Sungai Panjang assemblyman Budiman Mohd Zuhdi on the rising cost of housing in Selangor.

Meanwhile, Kamarol Zaki did not want to comment on his motion being rejected, saying only that he would wait for the official letter from the House as the matter was just verbally uttered by the Speaker for now.

Earlier, online newsportal the Malay Mail Online reported that Kamarol Zaki had suggested the motion to debate the Hudud law and had submitted his suggestion last week.

“It was submitted last week by Inmind on my behalf,” he was quoted as saying, referring to the Institut Perkembangan Minda, an agency acting on behalf of BN assemblymen in Selangor.
